Born in Austria to Ghanaian parents, 20-year-old central defender Kevin Danso becomes Southampton’s third addition of the summer transfer window after joining from Bundesliga side FC Augsburg.

A pacey and powerful centre-back, Danso moved to England at the age of six and joined the MK Dons Academy set-up, at the same time as Tottenham’s Dele Alli, aged nine.

Having been a striker in Reading’s Academy prior to that and a midfielder in MK Dons’, he departed for Augsburg in 2014, where he would become one of their most promising youngsters at the heart of their defence.

Indeed, in March 2017, he made his Bundesliga debut at the age of 18 years and 165 days old, in a 2-2 draw with Ralph Hasenhüttl’s RB Leipzig, to become the youngest player to make a league appearance in the history of the club.

His burgeoning talents did not go unnoticed on the international scene either and, having represented Austria youth teams at U15 level all the way through to the U19s, he received a first senior call-up in May 2017 and made his debut against Wales four months later.

Danso has appeared at St Mary’s in a pre-season friendly, playing 63 minutes before being replaced by Gojko Kacar.

Retention of his goalscoring instincts from those younger days were in evidence in November of the 2017/18 campaign, when an equaliser in the 1-1 home draw against Bayer Leverkusen made him Augsburg’s youngster ever scorer at 19 years and 46 days.

In the same season, a stunning defensive display against Borussia Dortmund drew wide praise from pundits, as Danso stifled an in-form Michy Batshuayi at Signal Iduna Park. Not content with winning 70% of his duels with the Belgian international, he scored the equaliser at the other end when he turned home the ball after his powerful header was saved.

He continued to impress during the 2018/19 campaign, making 21 appearances in the Bundesliga and German Cup, before heading to represent Austria Under-21s in the European Championships.
