Southampton FC can confirm the addition of two new technical staff to its Academy ahead of the 2019/20 season.

David Hughes has joined the club from Aston Villa, taking on the role of Head of Player Development, while David Horseman, previously of Bristol City, has taken up a position as Under-23s Assistant Coach.

Both appointments form part of the restructure of football staff at Staplewood Campus – announced in early July – and represent significant additions to the club’s Academy programme.

David Hughes will have particular focus on supporting the progress of young talent across all age groups, while David Horseman will work alongside Radhi Jaïdi, developing players within the Under-23 group.

We spoke to both during their first week on the south coast, as well as Academy Director Matt Hale who explained the importance of adding yet more valuable expertise to the club's Academy.

“It’s great to finally get both David’s started at the club,” Hale said.

“Since January, myself and Ross Wilson embarked upon a European wide search for a Head of Player Development. David Hughes was undoubtedly the standout candidate and his eye for detail and passion for youth development fits perfectly with our culture and philosophy at Southampton.

“I’m also delighted to welcome David Horseman, who will work closely with Radhi Jaïdi and the Under-23s. David has a huge amount of experience working with professional phase players.

“He has seen many young players transition through to first-team football and his experience will be vital to nurturing our young players in the final stages of their academy years.”

These two roles were especially important for us to spend time getting right.

Director of Football Operations, Ross Wilson said: “It’s been a busy summer at Staplewood, but these two roles were especially important for us to spend time getting right.

“We want to ensure that our youth system continues to improve and evolve so we’re always at the forefront of Academy development.

“From working with David Hughes in the past, I know how passionate he is about coaching and developing young players and I am excited to work with him again.

“Equally, David Horseman impressed us greatly with his knowledge and desire to improve players and he will be a strong addition to Matt Hale’s team in the Academy.”
