Angus Gunn was forced to watch on as the Young Lions kicked off their Under-21 European Championships campaign with a 2-1 defeat against France.
Aidy Boothroyd’s men were unlucky not to take the lead in the first-half, with Demarai Gray and Dominic Solanke going close, before Dean Henderson kept out Moussa Dembele’s penalty at the other end.
On 54 minutes though, Manchester City’s Phil Foden broke the deadlock when he picked the ball up before weaving his way through a number of France defenders and coolly rolling an effort past Paul Bernardoni from just inside the area.
There was another penalty for France just after the hour mark, with Hamza Choudhury shown a red card after a VAR review, but Houssem Aouar could only strike the post.
But despite their resistance, England couldn’t hold as Jonathan Ikone finished after receiving a Jeff Reine-Adelaide pass inside the area late on, before Aaron Wan-Bissaka turned Jean-Phillipe Mateta's flick-on into his own net deep into added time to complete the reverse.
