Footballers of all ages turned out for the unique opportunity to play at St Mary’s last week.
Saints Foundation’s day on the turf started with schoolchildren from around the city descending on the stadium for a festival of participation.
Plenty of goals were scored from our schools that host both Primary Stars and Community Champions before more of our projects were given the opportunity to play at the Premier League venue.
Saints4Sport, SaintsAbility and Saints4All participants all took part in matches as the morning’s session ended.
Former Saints players, including Southampton’s Under-23 manager Radhi Jaidi, Paul Jones, Glen Cockerill and Brian Howard were all in attendance to test out our city’s businesses in a six-a-side tournament, supported by Biffa.
Although competitive, the games against our legends were friendlies. The real action came on the other pitches as the businesses went head-to-head for the ultimate prize. Throughout, it was a tight affair and the final mirrored the tournament action with Balfour Beatty taking home the spoils.
The day didn’t finish there though as we welcomed more than 300 children on the hallowed turf for our unique soccer school. Plenty of fun was had as their parents cheered them on from the Northam Stand.
There are plenty more opportunities to get involved with our soccer schools this summer. For more information, please visit saintsfoundation.co.uk
