We've picked five of our favourite posts from Southampton's Instagram account during a rollercoaster 2018/19 season.

5. James Ward-Prowse, Mr.Southampton

Goals in three consecutive Premier League games in March were a just reward for James Ward-Prowse’s strong form since the beginning of 2019.

A regular fixture in the Saints midfield, Ward-Prowse’s strikes against Fulham, Manchester United and Tottenham caught the eye of England boss Gareth Southgate who named the Academy graduate in his squad for the EURO 2020 Qualifiers against Czech Republic and Montenegro later that month.

Naturally, the iconic jump and spin at St Mary’s following the match-winning free-kick past Spurs’s Hugo Lloris was the basis for a celebratory post for his fully deserved first international call-up since March 2017.

4) Charlie Austin and VAR

With the score at 1-1, following Manolo Gabbiadini’s first-half goal, Charlie Austin thought he doubled the home side’s lead against Watford.

Instead, his strike was disallowed after his shot it was judged that Maya Yoshida interfered with the flight of the ball from an offside position before Jose Holebas’s deflected strike completed a deflating turnaround for the Hornets late on.

The Saints striker called for the immediate introduction of VAR in his post-match interview and, within a matter of days, the Premier League announced that the system would be used for the 2019/2020 season. When Austin speaks, people listen.

3) Keep it cool, Ralph!

Saints’ 3-2 win over Arsenal in Ralph Hasenhüttl’s first home game in charge in December will surely go down as one of the performances and afternoons of the entire season.

The excitement around St Mary’s was palpable at kick-off and kicked into the highest gear when Danny Ings met Matt Targett’s superb left-wing cross to smash a header past Bernd Leno after 20 minutes.

The reaction of the new man in the dugout was priceless, the first of so many Hasenhüttl highlights from a stirring second half of the season.

2) Happy Valentine’s Day, Stuart Armstrong

Everyone has their secret admirers and Valentine’s Day is the day to reveal those feelings as soon and as best you can.

Who better to sum that up than Stuart Armstrong?

1) Shane Long, Premier League record breaker

Shane Long needed just 7.69 seconds to give Saints the lead at Watford.

The Irishman made a beeline for the ball straight from kick-off at Vicarage Road, charging down Craig Cathcart’s long pass after 3.55 seconds, reaching the edge of the box on 6.58 and celebrating less than a second later.

A convenient shirt number, a perfect photo opportunity and a Premier League record was immortalised.
