Southampton FC Women extended their perfect record in the Southern Region Women's Football League Premier Division on Wednesday night, as they earned a 6-0 victory over Warsash Wasps.

Marieanne Spacey-Cale’s side headed into the week knowing that four points from their two home fixtures at AFC Totton would be enough to clinch the title, and they took a significant step by making it 16 wins from 16 league games in the first of those tests.

Saints started brightly and almost had the lead after just three minutes, when Chloe Newton was played through, only to see her lobbed effort go inches over the bar.

Moments later, Ellie Chaffe beat Chelsea Bates down the left before sending an inviting cross in towards the front post run of Ella Pusey, whose instinctive first-time effort went just wide.

Pressure was continuing to build, with Saints’ strike force proving a handful, and on 26 minutes, the deadlock was broken. Phoebe Williams’ pass set Chaffe away down the left, and her low drive towards the near post was too powerful for Rebecca Gardiner.

Just before the break, Saints doubled their advantage when Georgie Freeland’s inch-perfect cross found Pusey, who kept her composure to take the ball around Gardiner and steer the ball home.

The second-half continued in a similar vein and Shannon Sievwright was close to making it 3-0 before the hour mark. Williams’s driving run and pass saw Newton set the ball back on the edge of the area, but the resulting left-footed effort flew past the post.

But the points were secured when captain Shelly Provan found space to deliver a wonderful cross from the left to find Freeland, who made no mistake with her side-footed finish into the top corner.

They weren't done there though, and substitute Rachel Woods was next on the scoresheet when she sent an unstoppable free-kick beyond the keeper's grasp.

And when the ball dropped inside the box for Emily Wernham late on, she slammed the ball home to make it five, before Freeland's looping header rounded things off.

Saints are in action again on Sunday 21st April, facing Barton Rovers at AFC Totton in a 2pm BST kick-off, when they can seal the title if they avoid defeat.
