Nathan Redmond believes the manner of Southampton’s victory over Wolves is further proof the team’s hard work on the training ground is paying dividends.

The 3-1 victory at St Mary’s extended Saints’ lead over 18th-placed Cardiff to eight points with five games to go.

Wolves have been in the race to finish ‘best of the rest’ outside the top six, but two-goal winger Redmond is confident Saints are getting closer to that level of performance themselves.

“It’s massive in the grand scheme of things, but also for us – just letting us know that our hard work is coming to some results,” he said of the win.

“I think we’re learning from past mistakes. Today was about keeping the pressure on Wolves and letting them know we’re here to take all three points.

“Today showed we can compete with those sorts of teams and we’re not far off.

“I’ve seen stats that say since the manager took over we would be ninth or tenth in the league, so it’s no surprise to me.

“We’ve got a little bit of guidance, we’ve got basics and foundations, and with top, top players in that dressing room we should be up there.”
