A pair of significant wins for Sofiane Boufal and Jordy Clasie had big impacts at both ends of their respective league tables over the weekend while Jake Hesekth’s MK Dons faltered in their push for automatic promotion from League Two.
Winger Boufal featured for 81 minutes for Celta Vigo who made it two wins and a draw from their last three to pull two points clear of the relegation zone in La Liga.
Iago Aspas’s double and Maxi Gomez’s stoppage-time strike overturned an early Real Sociedad lead to secure a 3-1 win and a sliver of breathing space for Celta in the race against the drop.
In Holland, Clasie’s Feyenoord consolidated their position in third with a 3-0 win over VVV Venlo.
Clasie – who has played in all but one of the Rotterdam club’s league fixtures this season – was withdrawn after 71 minutes but only after goals for Sam Larsson, Nicolai Jorgensen and Tyrell Malacia had set up a comfortable away victory.
There was disappointment meanwhile for Hesketh and promotion-chasing MK Dons. A 2-0 home defeat allowed Lincoln to take a giant step towards League One, extending their lead at the top to 11 points thanks to goals from John Akinde and Bruno Andrade.
A rare blip it what has been a richly positive spell for the midfielder, who once again completed the full 90 minutes for his loan team.
