We bring you the key points from Ralph Hasenhüttl's morning press conference, as the Saints boss discusses this Friday's Premier League meeting with Liverpool under the lights at St Mary's.
…on safety and form
It would be dangerous to think we are already safe and I can guarantee you that we don’t. We know how tough it was so far to get the right points at the right moment and there are still a lot of points to get so we must stay focused.
The results in midweek were good for us but it’s still a long way to go and the earlier we get to 40 points the better.
The win against Tottenham was a win nobody expected and the win against Brighton was a six-pointer and very important. At the moment, the team feels that the way we play is a successful way and we can create problems for every opponent.
The flexibility of our game is rising and that means we can play in different shapes easily and switch. In the last game, I think we surprised the opponent a bit playing 4-2-2-2 and I like this shape and it worked very well. This is the kind of development we need at this point of the season.
…on turning the season around
It gives an indication that we had to take this many points because otherwise we would not stand in the position we are at the moment. I was always talking about taking points consistently and we did.
The way the guys did it was the way we demands them to do with a very active way of playing the game and this pressing style is something the guys get used to a crucial key for winning games.
If you want it’s one of the two top teams in England but the top six are not easy to play against.
It’s the first time we play against a very good pressing team and the style of football I prefer.
You can see this team is one step or two steps ahead in their development. Good balance and organised team with a clear plan and nice to watch also for me.
How they play is a perfect example of physically strong team combined with technical qualities, speed and good organisation. You can think why it’s so difficult to win against this team and only Manchester City made it so far.
It’s an option to stay in the 4-2-2-2 but switch to the 5-3-2. We have a few shapes we can play in and I have not found the final decision so far.
…on embracing the challenge
It is maybe a big challenge but I like this challenge. I am happy that my team at that different style of football and shapes at the moment makes it easy to switch from one shape to the other.
It will be a very interesting game for the coaches for both sides and we will have to do a lot of work with coaching the team.
We are not frightened about this game or walking out on the pitch at the stadium because we have the crowd behind us and pushing us for sure.
Suddenly there is a chance to turn the tables in the game and we have to be prepared and have the chance to take something.
…on Jurgen Klopp
I think he uses very often warm words for the opposition managers! I know him as a very honest guy and I know that if he says something (that I’m doing a great job) then it’s not only a tactic but it’s honest.
He has known me for a long time although we didn’t play a lot of times against each other. We had our coaching badges, we were starting them together and we have known each other for a long time. We played against each other as well.
…on team news
Ingsy is not allowed to play so we have to have a new offensive position. Longy is back in training and is an option. Jannik Vestergaard is training too but if he is not ready then Jack Stephens is an alternative.
It’s a pity that Mario Lemina is not back in training again because he still has problems this week so he needed more rest. We are trying to bring him back to the right level step by step but it isn’t easy when he has had such a long time without playing. We will definitely see him again before the end of the season.
