It was yet another positive afternoon in the Southern Premier Football League for Southampton FC Women, who made it eleven wins from eleven with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Woodley United on Sunday afternoon.
They were made to work hard for a breakthrough after squandering some early chances, but controlled proceedings after Chloe Newton's opener, who was quickest to react to a loose ball a few minutes shy of the break, and bundled home for a half-time lead.
Upping the quality in the second period, a stunning header from Ellie Chaffe gave Saints some breathing space, as she latched onto Georgie Freeland's floated cross, and nodded towards the top right, finding the far corner.
The scoring was completed late in the game by birthday girl Ella Pusey, whose relentless hard work and pressing paid dividends in the closing stages, pinching the ball off Woodley's stopper and rolling into an empty net.
The victory preserves Saints' perfect league run, but they don't yet have the points tally to overtake first-placed AFC Bournemouth, who themselves put five past Barton Rovers this weekend - extending their favourable goal difference.
Marieanne Spacey-Cale's side have a game in hand on their south coast neighbours, but the two sides remain locked on points, ahead of a top of the table clash at the end of March - which could ultimately be a title decider.
