So many aspects of the home side’s performance against Spurs will have pleased a sold-out St Mary’s on Saturday, not least the match-winning contributions of the club’s Academy graduates.

A first half dominated by Tottenham gave way to a high-pressing, relentless and aggressive home showing after the break, spearheaded by the introduction of Josh Sims – making his first appearance of the season – and decided by the goal-scoring combination of James Ward-Prowse and Yan Valery for the second consecutive week.

“They showed that one is for free-kicks and the other is for getting into good scoring positions again!” said Ralph Hasenhüttl on Saturday evening

“Prowsey is amazing, his technique is sensational and I think the practice he does in this part of his game helps him a lot. In the second half, he played in the number six position and it was a great overall game, to decide the result like this is great for him.”

The second-half cameo of Sims, pulling on a Southampton jersey for the first time since 14 April of last year, shifted the momentum back in the home side’s favour and suggested at a influential role for the young winger between now and the season’s end.

“I was very happy with Josh’s performance,” the Saints boss added. “It was exactly what I wanted to see from him. He is always attacking and has good solutions on the ball, making very few mistakes in possession. He was really aggressive and has speed so he can really hurt defences.”
