A week on from the cruel defeat at Manchester United, Ralph Hasenhüttl's message to his Southampton players as he prepares them for Tottenham Hotspur is be proud, but also be better.
Saints came close to taking something from their trip to Old Trafford last Saturday, and produced a performance that was certainly deserving of at least a point, only to lose 3-2 as Romelu Lukaku struck an 89th-minute winner.
ralph hasenhüttlit is important we believe in our strengths, and we showed against manchester united that we have them.
Hasenhüttl's side now return home to go up against another of the Premier League's top teams, and the boss wants his players to take the lessons from United into this weekend's match.
"The way we are playing is one thing, taking points is another thing," said Hasenhüttl, whose team head into the latest round of games one place and two points above the relegation zone.
"We can be proud about the performance, but still at the end of the game when we were hanging onto the ropes it was not enough to defend against such a team.
"That's what we still have to improve in our game. We are very self-critical always and try to learn and try to get better and that's what we have to do, because Tottenham is the next big opponent."
The Southampton manager added: "This team is also part of the Champions League and has showed how it can combine technical performance with tactical performance and that together is very hard to defend, because if they have the ball they can find the best pass in the best moment to find the right player.
"They also have a very flexible shape, flexible playing with the ball, so it's very hard to defend this team. It is not a coincidence they are performing so well in the Premier League – although Kane was out with injury for a long time, they were still winning.
"But, for us, it is important that we also believe in our strengths and we showed against Manchester United we have them. We can score against such teams and we can be a nasty opponent also, because if you work good against the ball then it is not so easy to score against us."
