Saints secured their place in the Hampshire Senior Cup semi-finals – where they will meet Basingstoke Town – courtesy of a 2-0 win over Bournemouth FC on Tuesday night.

Tom O'Connor’s excellent early free-kick set them on their way before Jamie Bradley-Green’s instinctive finish from Will Ferry’s corner made the result safe late in the second half on the back of a spell of concerted pressure from their hard-working hosts.

Radhi Jaïdi’s young side went into the game fresh from extending their lead at the top of the PL2 Division 2 table the previous Friday against Fulham and quickly set about imposing themselves on the night.

They may have led inside five minutes; Kameron Ledwidge’s early cross from the left was scrambled off the line as Ferry’s feather touch at the back post caught out the onrushing Sam Jones in the Bournemouth goal.

The evening’s opener was not far behind; a foul on Jonathan Afolabi on the edge of the penalty area gave O'Connor the chance to show his class and the midfielder duly obliged, curling his free-kick into the top corner on 15 minutes.

Tom O'Connor's free-kick laid the platform for a hard-earned Saints victory.

From then on, complacency would be the greatest threat to Saints, against combative opposition; Bournemouth’s Don Falco hooking a half-volley inches past Alex Cull’s far post after a long ball had fallen his way.

A slip from Afolabi allowed the home defence to recover after the Irishman had raced in behind on the half-hour mark but the visitors would have to wait until the second half to create their best chances of doubling their advantage.

Tyreke Johnson dragged a half-volley wide before Jones denied Tom O’Connor at point-blank range after the midfielder had jinked his way into the danger area, both within five minutes of the restart.

The home keeper needed to be sharp again to block Will Ferry’s low drive with his legs just before the hour yet the Poppies clung on and remained in the game, testing opposite number Cull’s handling through set pieces and long throw-ins at the other end.

River Smith curled just over the top of the Saints goal in one of few forays forward from open play midway through the half and the chance galvanised the home side. Cull was by far the busier of the two goalkeepers as the game approached its final stages, with crosses causing problems from both flanks.

Ironically, Saints removed all doubt over the result from a set-piece of their own nine minutes from time, as Bradley-Green emerged amongst the bodies in a crowded penalty area to steer home low and left-footed from Ferry's corner from the left.
