Under-23s boss Radhi Jaïdi was disappointment with a below par Southampton performance in the wake of a 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the Premier League Cup.

In tough conditions, Saints weren’t able to play their way into the game, and conceded three goals, without reply, for the first time this season.

Understandably frustrated, Jaïdi believes a period of reflection, ahead of next week’s crucial Premier League 2 meeting with Fulham, is needed if Saints are to return to their best.

“It's not us,” Jaïdi conceded. “If I'm assessing the past 10 games, we've been on the front foot.

“We've achieved most of what we've set out to do recently, so tonight is very disappointing.

“We started poorly. We were battling the conditions, and had two younger boys who are new to the team.

“Some bad individual performances tonight. We need to make sure we address that before the next game.

“We need more consistency and dig in more. There’s a lot of distractions, and the boys need to be reminded of their responsibilities.”
