We bring you the key points from Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhüttl's press conference, ahead of the Premier League home game against Crystal Palace...
“It’s how I told you last time, if you would discuss every player who is linked with us I think it would take a long time.
“Typical for our transfer period now is that we have spoken about making this group smaller and I think that shows you two things. One is that we trust in the guys here and we wanted to create energy in sending a few guys away to make the group smaller and create energy to give us a chance to work better with them.
ralph hasenhüttlthis group we are working with at the moment is a group we can trust.
“You can be sure we have our eyes open and if we don’t sign a player in this transfer period then maybe we sign one for the summer but we do it now, that can also be a possibility.
“But this group we are working with at the moment is a group we can trust and they showed we can trust them and they do it better than at the beginning of the season.”
On Charlie Austin…
“We are trying to find a win-win situation for both sides.
“In Charlie’s situation, he played two times from the beginning since I am here and he’s a fantastic striker who can score for any team.
“He is 100 per cent professional and shows the team if you need him he is here and like against Arsenal if you need him he is immediately in the game.
“As every player, also he wants to play from the beginning in the starting XI and if there is not the option here in Southampton maybe he looks for another club where he has this option and then we have to talk about this.”
On using the free weekend to train...
“When you don’t have a game on the weekend it is strange. We had a good last week and made two very intensive training sessions with one game, 11 against 11, where we tried to look at all the players who didn’t play as often until now.
“The last two days we were focused on the Crystal Palace game and put all the stuff in we wanted to learn for this game.
“Tactically it is a very interesting game against a good organised and balanced team and we need good solutions with the ball and without the ball, so we had a lot to learn and teach the players and spent a lot of time with video sessions.
“We had a good mixture of physically intensive training sessions and good mind work and hopefully we will see on Wednesday we prepared it well.”
Can this be a defining game?
“It’s a big chance. The next three games are very important because they are all opponents in our zone where we often speak about the six-point games. If you don’t lose one it’s a big step forward and the more games you win the bigger the step can be."
On Crystal Palace…
“It’s not so easy, because it’s a very good manager with a very clear plan and they showed against the big teams they are not unbalanced in any time of the game. It will be tactically very interesting.”
On beating Palace earlier in the season…
“It was a very long time ago and the team was completely differently prepared for other tactical stuff and that doesn’t make any sense to look back so far.
“We look back on what we have developed in the last weeks and the good things. We have showed we can score nearly against very team and we also are able to defend better as a team and that helps us to bring the chance to take these wins.”
On whether the players understand his philosophy more now…
“I think that’s shown in the point that we are not looking at the moment extremely quickly on new players.
“We see we have quick learning players and they have shown there is more potential than maybe a lot of people thought they have.
“That shows me with this quick-learning team we have the chance to make the next step.
“What we do now is to find the limits, to take this into the summer and let everyone show how good he is, how much he can learn and how much he can develop his game. Then I think we have a good chance to stay in this Premier League and that’s the only goal we have.”
