Ralph Hasenhüttl feels the 2-1 victory over Everton was the best performance under his stewardship to date as his Southampton made it back-to-back wins in the Premier League.
James Ward-Prowse’s strike from 20 yards opened the scoring, before an own goal from the unfortunate Lucas Digne gave Saints a two-goal cushion.
And despite Gylfi Sigurðsson pulling one back just as the fourth official indicated four minutes would be added, Saints held firm to earn another precious three points.
“Back-to-back wins are always very important and I think so far it was the best performance I have seen until now. With the ball and against the ball it was a very committed performance,” Hasenhüttl said.
“We could have scored four or five times minimum today and we hit the post twice. The guys were very focused and physically in a very good shape because we played 120 minutes on Wednesday and I had the feeling we were physically the better team today at the end.
“It was amazing how we defended the last set-pieces in eight minutes of overtime. We believed in the chance to win today and it was very important for us.
“It was very impressive and a deserved win which helps us a lot. We have ten days until the next game and we can really work very hard as well as recover in the right moments.
“With this open-mindedness and a team who wants to learn, I enjoy every day I work with these guys, because we have fantastic characters in this team. It makes it a lot of fun.”
