Southampton Under-18s made the perfect start to 2019 in the Under-18 Premier League as they overcame their West Ham United counterparts at Staplewood Campus on Saturday morning.

Paul Hardyman’s men ran out 5-1 winners, with Roland Idowu netting a goal in either half and goals from Rio Glean, Ryan Cluett and Jack Turner rounding things off late on to secure all three points, despite a goal from Jayden Fevrier previously halving the deficit.

Saints were looking to respond to their defeat to Liverpool before the festive break, but it was the visitors who settled into the contest quickest, with Emmanuel Longelo’s early effort drifting just wide of Jack Bycroft’s post.

But as the first-half drew on, Saints started to impose themselves on the contest. Glean was linking up well with Seamas Keogh down the right and forced a smart save from Serine Sanneh at the near post.

And on 33 minutes the deadlock was broken as Glean once again tested the keeper with a powerful drive that was parried straight into the path of the onrushing Idowu, who tapped home.

Saints’ youngsters had a golden chance to double the advantage shortly after, as Keogh’s persistence down the right after a one-two with Benni Smales-Braithwaite saw him afforded the space to deliver an inch-perfect cross into the centre, only for Callum Watts to steer his header over the bar.

There was one last chance for the Hammers though in the opening period. Veron Parkes’ neat cut back inside the box teed up Bernardo Rosa, who saw his right-footed effort saved superbly by Bycroft.

West Ham made a change at the break to try and turn the momentum in their favour, but it was Saints who doubled the advantage on the hour mark in bizarre circumstances.

Sanneh looked to play a short goal-kick into the feet of captain Kristijan Belic, but Idowu read it and pressed high to dispossess him and finish coolly across goal.

It looked as though Saints were comfortable, but when Parkes set out on a jinking run, Watts was adjudged to have brought him down on the edge of the area in a promising position. Three players were stood over it, but left-back Fevrier hit a left-footed strike underneath the wall which deflected in.

Despite that, the hosts kept their focus and were rewarding with ten minutes to go. Watts released Smales-Braithwaite down the right and drove forward before sliding a pass into the path of Glean for a first-time finish.

There was time for two more goals too. Keogh was the provider for the first as his wonderful through ball down the right set Cluett away and he broke into the box unopposed to finish, before Smales-Braithwaite got his second assist.

The forward twisted and turned inside the box before looking up and finding Turner's run and he made no mistake at close quarters.
