Ralph Hasenhüttl watched on as Southampton's youngsters soared through to the knockout phases of the Premier League International Cup with victory over West Ham.

Marcus Barnes and Tyreke Johnson were on the scoresheet, which was aided further by a Hammers goalkeeping mishap, as Saints ran out comfortable 3-0 winners, and booked their place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Radhi Jaïdi was especially pleased with the energetic nature of the performance, as his young side raced into a two nil lead in the first half hour, before settling into the tie and controlling the tempo throughout.

"I'm really pleased and happy with the overall performance," the Under-23s boss said. "The boys applied everything we asked of them.

"A lot of energy and intensity, especially in the first half. The goals came from two set-plays, and one on the transition. The boys deserve all the credit for that result.

"It's great to see us progressing in this competition. We're looking ahead to the next stage now.

"We've had a couple of chats with the manager, and he was really pleased with the way the boys played tonight.

"He [Ralph Hasenhüttl] likes to play with a high tempo and intensity and they showed that tonight.

"He spoke to the boys in the changing room and it's nice to have a first-team manager who believes in what we do."
