Southampton Under-18s suffered a heavy defeat away to their Aston Villa counterparts on Saturday morning, in the Under-18 Premier League.

An early blitz that put the youngsters 3-0 down after the opening 11 minutes set up a difficult afternoon, and, although they made it more of a contest after that, the hosts ended up prevailing 5-1.

Colin Odutayo’s third-minute penalty, following a trip right on the edge of the area, meant a nightmare start for Paul Hardyman’s side, and it would get worse immediately.

A miscued clear from Caleb Watts a minute later fell to Lewis Brunt 18 yards out, and he finished low to Jack Bycroft’s right.

Any hopes of potentially being able to make a comeback were pretty much ended in the 11th minute, when Jacob Ramsey got free from a corner to finish from close range.

It wasn’t long until Villa added a fourth, as Rio Glean committed a foul in the box and Tyreik Wright stepped up to finish the hosts’ second spot kick of the game.

Saints started the second half in better fashion, and did get a goal back on 52 minutes, as Benni Smales-Braithwaite was brought down 20 yards out, dusting himself off to beat the Villa keeper from the resulting free-kick with the aid of a deflection.

The game then petered out with little in the way of notable action, until Villa grabbed a fifth in added time, as Odutayo raced onto a through pass, rounded Bycroft and slotted home.
