Monday’s internationals could see as many as four Saints players in action for their respective nations in another busy night across the continent.
In Nations League games both kicking off at 7.45pm GMT this evening, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Jannik Vestergaard’s Denmark face Michael Obafemi’s Republic of Ireland while Mohamed Elyounoussi’s Norway take on Cyprus.
The Danish duo host the Irish at the Ceres Arena in Aarhus safe in the knowledge that they have already secured promotion to the Nations League’s top tier to go with a Euro 2020 play-off spot.
Denmark remain unbeaten in their pool - which also contains Wales – and played out a goalless draw with Martin O’Neill’s men at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium in October.
Youngster Obafemi was part of a senior international matchday squad for the first time in the Republic’s goalless draw with Northern Ireland last week and like Vestergaard and Højbjerg, will be hungry of a taste of action before returning to Southampton.
In the day’s other game, Moi Elyounoussi’s Norway will need to better Bulgaria’s result against Slovenia when they face Cyprus to maintain their hold on top spot of League C Group 3.
The Scandinavians have enjoyed a strong campaign so far, with Saints’ Elyounoussi instrumental by scoring the winning goal in his team’s potentially decisive 1-0 win over second-place Bulgaria last month.
