Steven Davis earned his 107th cap as Northern Ireland were cruelly beaten by a stoppage-time winner from Austria’s Valentino Lazaro at Windsor Park.
The Saints midfielder was an influential figure as Michael O’Neill’s side fought back from behind to draw level through Corry Evans 12 minutes into the second half in the Nations League clash.
Northern Ireland had a late opportunity to win the game, but when the attack broke down, Austria counter-attacked and West Ham’s Marko Arnautovic set up Lazaro, who finished superbly with virtually the last kick.
Davis and co. were already condemned to relegation from their Nations League group, while Austria finished second behind Bosnia.
Earlier in the day, Alex McCarthy was an unused substitute as England booked their place in next summer’s semi-finals with a dramatic victory over Croatia at Wembley.
Trailing 1-0 with 12 minutes to go, substitute Jesse Lingard tapped home the equaliser before Harry Kane slid in to score the winner late on.
