Pierre-Emile Højbjerg says Southampton’s players have no option but to produce a “massive reaction” when Watford visit St Mary’s on Saturday.
The midfielder was speaking in the aftermath of Sunday’s 6-1 defeat at Premier League champions Manchester City.
Højbjerg insists bouncing back against the Hornets must be the sole focus over the coming days.
“We’ve looked each other in the eyes and promised each other this is not who we are and what we are capable of,” he said.
“We have only one thing to do: go out next week and give a massive reaction, be on the front foot and go after the win.
“There is nothing else to do and nothing else we want than to go out against Watford and go for the win.
“After that, hopefully we can turn our season around.”
The Dane apologised to the club’s supporters after the game.
“We want to give everything we have to give them a win and give them a good afternoon,” he added.
“It’s only us players who can change it – that’s the good thing about football, you always have it in your hands, and we will show we have it on Saturday.
“We will be ready and do everything we can do to turn it around. This is what we have to do and what we want to do.”
