There were four Southampton youngsters in midweek action for loanee clubs on Tuesday evening, with Jake Hesketh starring for Burton Albion as they held League One leaders Portsmouth to a 2-2 draw at Fratton Park.
Pompey dominated the first half and took the lead when Oli Hawkins converted at the near post, before the tie was turned on its head by two quick-fire Burton goals.
Devante Cole levelled in the 48th minute, before Hesketh put the Brewers in front three minutes later, lashing the ball into the roof of the net after a fine solo run.
Defender Matt Clarke rescued a point for the hosts, but the draw cuts Pompey's lead at the top to four points.
In the Championship, Harrison Reed featured for the full 90 minutes as a Swansea City fightback halted Blackburn Rovers' recent momentum.
Tony Mowbray's side had taken the lead at the Liberty Stadium, thanks to Charlie Mulgrew's 26th minute penalty, but succumbed to three second-half goals, as the Swans moved to within a point of the Championship play-off places.
Elsewhere, Josh Sims was involved for 63 minutes of Reading's 2-1 loss to in-form Birmingham City, who extended their unbeaten league run to 10 games, while Sam McQueen came off the bench in the 72nd minute for Middlesbrough, as they were held 0-0 by Rotherham United.
