Jack Stephens has described next weekend’s game against Newcastle as a massive one and says it is important the players give the fans something to cheer about.
Saints will head into next Saturday’s match on the back of a positive performance at Bournemouth, having earned a 0-0 draw at Vitality Stadium, and will be aiming for a first home win of the season as they take on the Premier League’s bottom side.
“Next week against Newcastle is massive, there's no getting away from that,” said Stephens, who returned to the starting line-up in the league for the first time since August in the stalemate at Bournemouth.
“It's a home game, in front of our fans, and we're aware we haven't won at home this season yet.
“So we need to give them something to cheer about, and we need to get three points.
“Maybe we haven't got what we've deserved in games, but the table doesn't lie. Things haven't quite gone for us.
“We need the fans at home, you could hear them [at Bournemouth] and they make such a difference.”
