Southampton’s youngsters were narrowly beaten by their Leicester City counterparts at Staplewood Campus on Saturday morning.

One goal decided it, scored in the 28th minute by Foxes striker Will Russ, who was presented with a rather fortuitous rebound three yards from goal, which he duly buried.

The hosts had plenty of their own chances, in both halves, but weren’t able to find the necessary finish, despite playing the majority of the tie in Leicester’s defensive third.

Saints were asking plenty of searching questions early on, but it was the visitors who struck against the run of play.

Leicester had fired a warning shot in the prelude to the opener, which centre-back Allan Tchapchet fielded effectively enough, turning the ball off the line after it had snuck underneath Jack Bycroft.

But Saints weren’t as lucky second time around.

A harmless throw on the left found Shane Flynn in space, who took a touch before driving a fierce shot at Byrcroft, which the keeper was helpless but to parry.

Russ was the beneficiary, tapping in from close range, and giving Leicester the lead after half an hour played.

The home side dominated thereafter, creating chance after chance, but failing to convert.

Will Ferry bent an effort marginally wide from 20 yards, before Christian Norton tested Oliver Bosworth in the Foxes net - again without the desired outcome.

Moments later, a goalmouth scramble was nearly pounced upon by Kornelius Hansen, but eventually fumbled to safety, as the youngsters in red and white continued to build promising passages of play, but had the end product escape them.

Saints’ possessional dominance continued second half, and chances followed. Kam Ledwidge won the ball high up the pitch on the left, advanced well, and fizzed a low cross towards substitute Benni Smales-Braithwaite, but a blue shirt was first to meet the delivery.

Ferry was in behind seconds later, as the hosts sustained their assault, but again the towering frame of Lukas Husek interjected at the vital moment.

The final 10 minutes were agonising for Paul Hardyman’s youngsters, who, for all the will in the world, couldn’t find the net.

Taymar Fleary was inches away from connecting with a Kayne Ramsay cross, before Smales-Braithwaite latched onto a ball from the same source, only for his header to be clawed over by Bosworth.

Hansen had the final chance to take something from the game, as Bycroft opted to go long. Bosworth’s decision making was hesitant, allowing the midfielder to stake a claim for the ball, but the keeper eventually recovered and allowed the visitors to see out the game for maximum spoils.
