A stoppage time winner scored by Tom O’Connor sealed all three points for Radhi Jaïdi’s Under-23s in Premier League 2 action on Friday night.
Saints had given themselves a two-goal lead in the tie, but a second-half revival from Wolves threatened to spoil the party at St Mary’s, but for O’Connor’s dramatic 93rd minute decider.
Reflecting on the game, Jaïdi was disappointed to have allowed the visitors a route back into the game, but pleased his young side were able to rally and reclaim the lead seconds before the final whistle.
“I enjoyed the game, that's my assessment,” Jaïdi explained, smiling.
“In the periods where we conceded two goals, it was difficult to accept. The boys showed resilience and character to come back stronger.
“It's a great goal, and a great comeback. The winner came in stoppage time, a Tom O'Connor header from a corner - which is something we work on every day in training.
“We didn't drop our heads, we stayed in the game. Credit to the boys.
“On the opposite side, we've let a two-goal lead slip. You can't allow yourself to switch off.
“Two goals conceded in 60 seconds is not acceptable and the boys agree with that.
“But overall, there's a lot of good stuff to take from this game - we controlled a lot of the match and I'm pleased with the win. We're back on track.”
