#SaintsFC: Thanks a Million!

As @SouthamptonFC reaches the 1,000,000-follower mark on Twitter, we look back at some of our most memorable moments on the social platform:

10) Promoted to the Premier League!

After sending our first tweet - the announcement of the signing of Dan Harding - in March 2009, it took almost three years for our first 'big' moment on Twitter.

It was absolutely worth the wait: Saints returned to the Premier League after a seven-year absence with goals from Billy Sharp, José Fonte, Jos Hooiveld and Adam Lallana securing promotion on the final day of the Championship season.

Capital letters were all that was needed to convey the excitement; from April 2012, Southampton FC were back where they belonged.

9) Good luck, Tim

You never know who might be sitting down the aisle from you when you take your place at a football ground.

Saints fan Tim experienced this over the winter of 2015 at St Mary's to the point at which he reached out to the club for some help in arranging a special - and very public - introduction for him to help him get over his nerves...

8) Rickie Lambert retirement

The Saints number seven put pen to paper at St Mary's a matter of months after @SouthamptonFC was born and the striker would provide countless memories on the field in the seasons that followed.

Lambert was at the heart of an inexorable rise back to the Premier League where his goals established Saints in the top flight once more.

The day Rickie hung up his boots - following spells with Liverpool, West Brom and Cardiff - was always going to be an emotional one and so it proved. 235 appearances, 117 goals, two promotions, one Rickie Lambert.

7) Made for Heroes

The summer is made for superhero films and what better way to prove it than with a heroic animated kit launch?

Saints stars Manolo Gabbiadini, Ryan Bertrand, Fraser Forster and Maya Yoshida were reimagined by the club as 80's superheroes as they sought to rescue stolen Under Armour kit designs from an evil villain and return them safely to HQ.

The result - viewed just under one million times - captured the imaginations of Saints fans everywhere.

6) Good choice, Kim Kardashian!

An unexpected addition to the Saints family arose as part one of the biggest celebrity stories of 2015. The announcement of the birth of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's second child sent Twitter into overdrive not least when the baby boy's name was revealed: Saint West.

The opportunity was too good to pass up...

5) Ohhhh, Gabbiadini!

On May 8th at approximately 9.15pm at Swansea's Liberty Stadium, Manolo Gabbiadini pounced on a penalty-box scramble to score the most important goal of his Southampton career to propel Saints to within touching distance of Premier League survival.

A predictably tense affair was decided 17 minutes from time, just four minutes after Gabbiadini replaced the stricken Jan Bednarek, as the striker forced the ball home from a matter of yards out.

It was far from beautiful, but absolutely invaluable and the scenes in the visiting dressing room were predictably unforgettable.

4) Pompey poems

Who would have imagined that a poem would be one of Saints’ most popular tweets of all time?

Over 18 months on, the image of Pierre-Emile Højbjerg cupping his ear is still appearing in Saints fans’ timelines and with good reason.

All together now: “#SaintsFC are Red, Pompey are Blue…”

3) Bale's UCL Final brace

It was a Saints academy graduate who delivered the two decisive killer blows in the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League Final, one of them will go down as one of the best goals ever to be seen at that stage of the tournament.

Congratulations were in order for Gareth Bale from his first professional club as Real lifted the trophy at the expense of Liverpool in Kiev's Olympic Stadium.

2) Just some feedback...

The dramatic and triumphant conclusion of Saints' trip to Swansea at the end of last season was at odds to its beginning.

With pre-match preparations disrupted by logistical issues, Mark Hughes's men underwent a late relocation to the Vale Resort near Cardiff on the night of the fixture in south Wales, an event that prompted a review of the visit on TripAdvisor once they had safely returned home with all three points and Premier League safety all but confirmed.

1) Taylor Announced

Seen by over 6,000,000 eyes, the unveiling of Stuart Taylor’s new contract was Saints’ media event of the decade so far and by some distance.

From the nonsensical plot, the jaw-dropping drama and the show-stopping finale, it caused something of a stir on the internet.

The tweet – which even spawned a sequel from AS Roma – was retweeted more than 30,000 times, making it not only a very well-deserving winner here but also one of the most shared football tweets of 2017. #TaylorAnnounced.
