Jaïdi delighted by Newcastle display

Radhi Jaïdi praised the character of Southampton Under-23s after they made it seven games unbeaten with a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United in Premier League 2.

Michael Obafemi’s first-half goal was enough to win it for the visitors, who stood up to late pressure from Newcastle to preserve a clean sheet.

The result moves Saints’ youngsters to the summit of the table, and Jaïdi was delighted with the group.

“We’re really pleased with the three points. It’s not an easy place to come and take them so a massive well done to the boys,” Jaïdi began.

“We showed strong character and we stood up to the challenge from the opponent and some of the decisions from the officials. The boys fought and showed really strong character to keep a clean sheet.

“The resilience the boys showed and the defensive mindset to put their bodies on the line to block the shots and stretching themselves to stop the balls or head the balls was massive.

“The only thing I thought we could have done better was keeping the ball, being more calm and composed but with the age group we’ve got under pressure they need to learn a bit more.

“Overall, it’s a massive three points and we’re really pleased with the performance."
