There were victories for Jake Hesketh, Kingsley Latham, Ryan Seager, Jordy Clasie and Sofiane Boufal on a busy weekend of action for Saints loanees across the continent.

Youngster Hesketh made his Burton Albion debut in their 3-0 win over AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, coming off the bench for the final 30 minutes. Fellow Saints Jake Flannigan – who joined Burton as part of a double loan swoop on deadline day – was an unused substitute.

Further down the English pyramid, a man of the match performance from goalkeeper Latham – including a penalty save with his side already 1-0 down - guided Dorchester to a 2-1 win over Hartley Witney in the Southern Premier League.

Elsewhere in the UK there were defeats for Josh Sim’s Reading by two goals to one at Sheffield Wednesday – the winger catching the eye in a 30-minute second-half cameo – and Alfie Jones’s St.Mirren, comfortably beaten 4-1 by SPL leaders Hearts.

Sam McQueen and Harrison Reed watched on from the bench as Middlesbrough were held to a goalless draw by Leeds on Friday night and Blackburn succumbed to three second-half goals at Bristol City.

In Spain, Guido Carrillo’s penalty following Gareth Bale’s early volley briefly pegged back Real Madrid at the Bernabeu before goals from Karim Benzema and Sergio Ramos set up a 4-1 win.

Leganes – coached by Mauricio Pellegrino – have collected one point from their opening three fixtures on their return to La Liga.

Sofiane Boufal meanwhile was an 88th-minute substitute as Celta Vigo continued their unbeaten start to the season with an impressive 2-0 victory over Atletico de Madrid thanks to goals from Maxi Gomez and Iago Aspas.

There were a pair of successes in Holland as Seager’s Telstar registered their first Eerste Divisie success of the season over Utrecht, the striker featuring for 70 minutes, before Clasie’s Feyenoord made it nine points from their last three games with a 4-2 win against NAC Breda.
