Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has been named in Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad.

The call-up comes as a reward for his stellar displays since making his Saints league debut last December.

McCarthy was an integral part of the team’s survival in the Premier League, with his performances earning the Under Armour Fans’ Player of the Year award for 2017/18.

The 28-year-old does have previous international experience, having been capped three times at Under-21 level whilst on the books at Reading.

He has also earned two call-ups to the senior squad, doing so in 2013 and 2016, but is yet to win his first cap.

England will face Spain at Wembley in their first UEFA Nations League fixture on Saturday 8th September, before hosting Switzerland in a friendly at Leicester’s King Power Stadium three days later.

Everton's Jordan Pickford and Jack Butland of Stoke are the other keepers selected in Southgate’s 23-man squad.
