Academy Manager Matt Hale has been reflecting on Southampton's latest young recruit, Swiss international Alexandre Jankewitz, after the teenager this week completed a move from native club Servette.
The 16-year-old arrives on the south coast with a promising reputation, and Hale is particularly pleased that Saints were able to fend off competition from other clubs to secure the youngster's signature.
The signing of Jankewitz is another positive outcome of the club's widening scouting networks, which includes searching for young talent in the more remote parts of Europe, as Hale explains further.
"We've seen Alex play for his country at two difference age groups and played well. He's constantly effecting the game, having a big impact and that's the potential we've recognised.
"We put a lot of emphasis on young players at this club and when the market opens up, we need to ensure we're competitive.
Matt HaleWe're continually raising the bar in terms of bringing players of Alex's calibre to the club at a young age.
"Obviously we need to look for opportunities outside of England, to supplement the young players and talent we already have at the club.
"Our footprint is widening, so we've now got the ability to bring the likes of Alex to the club.
"We're continually raising our bar in terms of bringing players of Alex's calibre to the club at a young age.
"It is a significant move for us, and the level of player that we're looking to acquire now shows our intent in that area."
