A new era for Southampton’s Women’s and Girls’ programme under the leadership of Marieanne Spacey-Cale began today with victory in the preliminary round of the SSE Women’s FA Cup.

Saints’ season began with a trip to Winchester City Flyers, and the visitors emerged triumphant with a 2-0 success.

The team, which will feature in the South Region Women’s Football League Premier Division this term, came through in difficult conditions, as rain teemed down at the Simplyhealth City Ground.

The weather contributed to a first half in which chances were difficult to come by, with the sides going in level at 0-0.

Saints began to exert pressure in the second half, though, and it finally told in the 89th minute, when Emma Godden picked up the ball in midfield and drove a low shot into the bottom left-hand corner under the diving goalkeeper.

With the momentum, Saints continued to press into added time and were rewarded with a second goal, as Ellie Chaffe converged from a corner to ensure safe passage into the first qualifying round of the competition.
