Southampton Under-23s maintained their unbeaten start to the Premier League 2 campaign with a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Staplewood Campus.

Despite Saints’ dominance, it was the visitors that took the lead through DJ Buffonge’s penalty in the second-half, before Marcus Barnes levelled from a corner in a game that saw midfielder Callum Slattery sent off late on for a second bookable offence.

In the early exchanges, both sides looked comfortable on the ball without truly imposing themselves on the opposition goal.

It was Saints who fashioned the first effort of the contest though after good work from Tyreke Johnson down the left. Barnes couldn’t quite get a contact on his cross, but Jake Hesketh collected the ball and fired a left-footed shot that was comfortably saved.

The hosts continued to be in the ascendancy, but United looked a threat on the counter through Buffonge. On 31 minutes, the attacking midfielder fed the ball wide to Josh Bohui but Jake Vokins was across to thwart the danger as he entered the box.

A breakthrough was proving elusive, but the best chance came just a few minutes before the interval. Michael Obafemi’s effort fell into the path off Johnson after good work down the right by Yan Valery, but his effort was saved by Matej Kovar.

Jaïdi’s men continued where they left off after the interval. Johnson found space on the left and delivered an inch-perfect cross into Obafemi, but he couldn’t use the pace on it to get a header on target.

On 56, it was the visitors who took the lead from the penalty spot. Buffonge made his way into the box down the left and was brought down by Valery, before stepping up to send Jack Rose the wrong way.

But ten minutes later, Saints showed their resilience when Barnes headed home from a corner to deservedly level.

There was to be a twist though moments later when Slattery was sent off for a second bookable offence, sliding in on Tahith Chong near the touchline.

After that United enjoyed the majority of possession, but Obafemi went close to giving Saints the advantage, forcing a corner from his effort.

The visitors were applying late pressure and went close when a short corner was worked into Ethan Hamilton, who clipped the ball back into a dangerous area and Chong’s shot deflected out.

Nathan Tella was introduced for the goalscorer Barnes towards the end of the game, and they stood firm to gain a point.
