Radhi Jaïdi’s young Saints racked up a convincing 4-1 win at Stoke on Monday night, goals from Marcus Barnes, Thomas O’Connor, Michael Obafemi and Callum Slattery continuing an impressive start to the campaign.

After an even first half, a frantic two minutes after the hour brought the game to life as Stoke briefly levelled only for O’Connor, Obafemi and Slattery to ruthlessly take the game beyond the hosts at Clayton Wood.

Two wins from their opening two fixtures across the PL2 and PL International Cup ensured Saints headed to the Potteries in high spirits and it showed in a clinical performance in either half.

The pace of the attacking trio of Barnes, Obafemi and Tyreke Johnson carried a constant threat in behind the home defence throughout – featuring former Saint Cuco Martina – and their early lead was fully justified.

The former had flashed wide with his right foot within moments of kick-off at Clayton Wood but made no mistake with his left midway through the half, driving low into the corner from the edge of the box after his initial effort had been blocked.

The deficit was almost doubled from the restart, Obafemi gliding past his marker to fire at the legs of goalkeeper Daniel Gyollai from close range.

The opener triggered an improvement from Stoke, with Charlie Adam beginning to see more of the ball in the middle, but the Potters’ territorial advantage did little to threaten Saints’ control of the game at the half-time whistle.

Adam and co. began the second period the stronger and were left rueing the reflexes of Jack Rose within six minutes of the resumption of the action particularly given what was to follow.

Stoke skipper Oliver Shenton met Thibaud Verlinden’s firm right-sided delivery with power at the near post only to see his effort clawed out from under the bar by the diving Rose.

The save would light the touch paper on a breahtless final half an hour.

The Potters were fleetingly level shortly afterwards as Verlinden’s corner found the head of the unmarked Tyrese Campbell to glance home via the fingertips of Rose.

Back came Saints, a set-piece yielding a goal for the second time in as many minutes. Will Smallbone’s clipped free-kick was allowed to reach Christoph Klarer at the back post whose cushioned touch back into danger was steered home by skipper O’Connor.

The game’s fourth goal was its best. Smallbone’s positive forward pass picked out Hesketh in space, the midfielder’s spinning flick left the Stoke defence standing for Obafemi to sweep home low beyond the grasp of Gyollai.

A late spot-kick – emphatically dispatched by Slattery – added the finishing touches to a commanding performance from Radhi Jaïdi’s young charges.
