Southampton manager Mark Hughes has been speaking to the media this afternoon ahead of Saturday’s trip to Everton. Here’s what the boss had to say…

Everton’s new faces

“They’ve made a big investment in the team and in the manager. It could be that now is the best time to play them.”

Modern transfers

“I’m pleased to say I’ve had some input into every player brought into this club. Players moving between different clubs, leagues and countries can react in different ways to the same thing – there’s a period of transition.”

Last time at Everton

“We played well last year under really difficult circumstances. We were unfortunate to concede so late – it could’ve been a fatal blow, but we proved our character.”

Potential outgoings

“We’ve discussed that, and informed everybody that unless we feel we want to do business, the door is closed. We could potentially explore loan opportunities for people to get game time.”

Hopes for the season

“We want to do much better than last year. That was a setback, but more like a lump in the road on the path the club is on. We want to be back in the top half competing for European places.”
