Saints open up season with a draw
Mark Hughes’s team got its Premier League campaign up and running with a 0-0 draw at home to Burnley yesterday.
There were full debuts for Jannik Vestergaard and Stuart Armstrong, while fellow summer signings Mohamed Elyounoussi and Danny Ings made their first appearances from the bench.
Hughes said: “I think we got better as the game went on and, in the end, I think they were trying to run the clock down and get the draw, whereas we were trying to win the game.”
A special homecoming for Ings
Hometown boy Danny Ings, who joined on deadline day last week from Liverpool, was a happy man after making his debut for his local club.
The striker, who has taken on the number nine shirt, said: “It was fantastic. I was itching to get on, from warming up on the side, and to get the reception I got coming on was great.
“Having the club and the support behind me like that is incredible and I appreciate it a lot.”
Under-23s off to a flying start
Radhi Jaïdi’s team kicked off their Premier League 2 campaign on Friday night with a 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough, at Staplewood Campus.
Late goals from Alfie Jones and Marcus Barnes sealed the points in an accomplished display from the youngsters, who are hoping to mount a promotion charge in the second division of the competition.
Jaïdi said: “The players’ attitude and the hard work they put on the pitch pleased me most.”
Danny Butterfield departs
Under-18s lead coach Danny Butterfield left the club on Friday, as he moved to MK Dons to take on a first-team coaching role.
Butterfield, who helped the club achieve back-to-back promotions as a player in 2010/11 and 2011/12, has linked up with another former Saint, Paul Tisdale, at Stadium MK.
Academy coach Paul Hardyman, who joined from Watford in the summer, has taken over on an interim basis.
Under-18s edged by champions
Hardyman’s first game in charge couldn’t have been any harder, as the Under-18s hosted Chelsea, at Staplewood, on Saturday morning.
Kayne Ramsay bagged a late goal for the youngsters, but last season’s Under-18 Premier League champions emerged victorious, 3-1.
