Start your week off with a catch-up on the weekend's events at Southampton Football Club...

Southampton’s pre-season campaign came to an end on Saturday, as the hosted German club Borussia Mönchengladbach, at St Mary’s.

Saints suffered a 3-0 defeat, just three days after beating Celta Vigo 3-2 in their other home friendly, with the players now set to embark on their final week of preparations at Staplewood for next Sunday’s Premier League opener against Burnley.

Manager Mark Hughes said: “We’ve only got a week to go and there’s lots to work on, but I think everybody understands this time next week we’ll be ready to go.”

After his World Cup exploits with Japan this summer, Maya Yoshida was back in action for Saints at the weekend.

Introduced as a substitute during the second half against Mönchengladbach, the centre-back got his first minutes of pre-season, and came close to scoring from a James Ward-Prowse corner.

Yoshida said: “It’s good to be back on the pitch, and to get back my feeling and fitness as well. Now that I’m back I feel really hungry to play football. I want to play for Southampton and that’s an important mentality to have.”

There was sad news over the weekend for everyone connected with the club, with news of former player Cliff Huxford’s passing, at the age of 81.

The wing-half, who joined in 1959, made more than 300 appearances for Southampton and was described by Saints’ now honorary president Terry Paine as “One of the shrewdest signings that Ted [Bates] ever made.”

It’s not just Southampton’s first-team preparing to start their season this week.

The club’s Under-23 and Under-18 sides are both set to begin their own campaigns, as they look to both build on successful years last term.

Radhi Jaïdi’s Under-23s open up their Premier League 2 campaign against Middlesbrough, at Staplewood Campus, on Friday night (7pm BST), before Danny Butterfield’s Under-18s host Chelsea on Saturday (11am BST) in their Under-18 Premier League opener.

Southampton’s brand new Under Armour third shirt, which was worn for the first time in the 2-0 friendly win over Dijon FCO just over a week ago, went on sale over the weekend.

Supporters can get hold of the shirt in the club’s Stadium and Westquay Stores, as well as online.

Each fan who buys the shirt will also receive a free £5 gift card, courtesy of Virgin Media, that can be used with the club in store and online.
