Jannik Vestergaard is excited to lock horns with his former teammates tomorrow as Southampton play host to Borussia Mönchengladbach at St Mary’s (3pm).

The towering Danish defender was still on the German club’s books until completing the switch to Saints three weeks ago, and is looking forward to a swift reunion with old friends tomorrow.

Pre-season or not, Vestergaard is determined to finish on the winning side after expressing his gratitude to those who made his dream move to the Premier League possible.

“I am excited, because I didn’t have the chance to go back and say goodbye and ‘thank you’,” he said.

“It has only been through WhatsApp, so I look forward to seeing them, giving them all a hug and wishing them the best for the season and the future.

“I knew this game was coming when I signed and I thought it was pretty funny.

“I’ve gained some friends there and I’m looking forward to seeing them. But, of course, I want to beat them!”

Jannik Vestergaard is the feature interview in tomorrow’s matchday programme, in which he reveals which teammate has been the biggest help in settling into his new life in England, life at the World Cup and how he transformed his game from striker to defender.

Pick up your 68-page programme tomorrow from one of the numerous sellers outside St Mary’s and inside the stadium concourse at a reduced price of £3.
