Mark Hughes praised the work of strikers Shane Long and Manolo Gabbiadini in the pre-season win over Dijon FCO, and also revealed new keeper Angus Gunn will get more minutes this week after making his first appearance for the team.
Long and Gabbiadini were each on target in the 2-0 victory that saw Southampton sign off their training camp in France with a well-deserved victory, in Divonne-les-Bains.
Saints boss Hughes was pleased with the efforts of both, and was also glad to be able to get Long some game time after a minor injury limited his time in previous weeks.
"I thought it was important to get Shane back involved," he said. "He’s missed a little bit through injury, so it was good that he came back in.
"I thought Shane and Gabbi in the first half were really bright in their work and caused them a number of problems."
Hughes also gave Gunn, who signed this summer from Manchester City, a first appearance for the club, introducing him at half-time in place of Alex McCarthy, and he anticipates seeing more of him in the coming week, with home friendlies against Celta Vigo and Borussia Mönchengladbach on the horizon.
"He's going to get more minutes in the next two games as well – I think that's important," said Hughes. "He'll experience St Mary's, and that will be a box ticked for him."
