Mark Hughes felt his Southampton side showed a marked improvement, as they responded to their pre-season loss at Derby County with a comfortable victory over Dijon FCO at the end of their training camp in France.
Goals in either half from Shane Long and Manolo Gabbiadini earned Saints a 2-0 success, in Divonne-les-Bains, just a week after losing 3-0 to the Rams, at Pride Park.
mark hughesit's been a really pleasing week. we've put some good work in, and i'm starting to see that in our general play as well.
on the trip to Évian
Hughes, who was happy with the work his players put in throughout the entire week in Évian, was upbeat after the latest performance.
"I was pleased," he said. "I think it’s always important after having such a good training camp, which we’ve had, that you finish off in the correct way, and I thought we did that.
"It was a marked improvement on where we were at last weekend. I think the old adage a week’s a long time in football applies, and the amount of work we’ve done this week obviously showed in our performance.
"I thought it was a good performance. They’re a decent side. They got a bit frustrated towards the end and we had to keep our heads, but that’s a good thing. That’s another part of what you need to be exposed to at this stage of the season, to get you ready for the main event."
Saints fly home this evening, as they embark on their final preparations for the Premier League season at Staplewood Campus, with friendlies against Celta Vigo and Borussia Mönchengladbach, at St Mary's, to come next week.
"Overall, I thought as a workout it was exactly what we needed at this stage," said Hughes.
"We've got two really good games ahead of us now next week, and that will bring us on even more.
"So, overall, it's been a really pleasing week. We've had a good time, we've put some good work in, and I'm starting to see that in our general play as well."
