Southampton boss Mark Hughes feels his side can learn a lot from their 3-0 pre-season defeat to Derby County at Pride Park.
Second-half goals from Tom Lawrence and Mason Bennett saw the hosts secure a win in the East Midlands.
And despite it being early in the preparations for the Premier League, Hughes is looking forward to a productive pre-season camp in Évian-les-Bains.
“Ideally you want to win every game and go into the new season with a clean bill of health but it’s very rare that it happens and you know there’s going to be situations where you’re not quite ready to go,” Hughes reflected.
“We were a little bit undercooked today I think in terms of where we were and where they were. They were a little bit sharper, had a little bit more energy and anticipation that I was hoping to see from our squad.
“That will come. We’re still very early in our preparations and we’ve got a good week ahead of us next week.
“We’ve got some good work to do with them to make sure we’re on the front foot rather than trying to come back in games and concede too readily.
“We’re looking to be better than we were today. We’ve got some good games coming up that will test us again and I expect us to be a lot better.”
