Southampton’s first recruit of the summer Stuart Armstrong believes that his transfer represents a perfect fit between player and club.
The Scottish international has put pen to paper on a four-year deal from Celtic and spoke of his satisfaction at completing his move to St Mary’s and the Premier League on Tuesday.
“It’s a really nice feeling,” he said in his first interview as a Southampton player. “It’s all gone very quickly over the past few days but it’s great to finally be here and I’m very happy.
“I felt it was the right time to move and Southampton seems a great fit. Watching from afar, I’ve enjoyed the attractive football that they play and it just feels right.
“You can see the quality that’s already present in this squad and I’ll be hoping to learn from the players here and improve myself. I’ve got a really good feeling about the choice.”
A consistent goal-scorer and creator in his time in Glasgow – registering 28 goals and 35 assists in three-and-a-half seasons with The Hoops – at the forefront of Armstrong’s mind is transferring his attacking instincts from Parkhead to St Mary’s for the new campaign.
stuart armstrongI work hard, i run hard for the team and, on the nicer side of things, hopefully i'll be adding a few goals here and there too.
“Southampton play an attacking style of football and that’s a big part of my game. Every season, I put demands on myself and set targets to create and score. I hope going forwards from here that it will be the same here.
“It’s a four-year contract and I hope that there will be a lot to learn in that time. There’s a strong element of stability there and I want to hit the ground running. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone and I’m very excited to get started.”
