Maya Yoshida played the full 90 minutes for Japan as they fell to a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in Lugano.
Ricardo Rodriguez put the hosts in front on 42 minutes from the penalty spot after Yoshida was adjudged to have fouled Breel Embolo inside the box.
Benfica forward Haris Seferovic made sure of victory eight minutes from time for the Swiss, who start their World Cup campaign with a difficult contest against Brazil on 17th June.
Yoshida’s Japan face one more preparation fixture against Paraguay before taking on Senegal, Colombia and Jan Bednarek’s Poland in Group H.
Bednarek was also in action on Friday night, playing the duration of Poland’s 2-2 friendly draw with Chile.
A 53rd international goal for Robert Lewandowski gave them the lead in Poznan, before Piotr Zielinski doubled the lead from Kamil Grosicki's low centre just four minutes later.
But it was not to be a winning night, as Chile’s Diego Valdes pulled one back and Miiko Albornoz levelled.
Poland will face Lithuania in their final friendly before their Group H campaign in Russia.
