Maya Yoshida has called on his Saints teammates to look forwards and fight until the very end following Thursday night’s goalless draw with Leicester City.

Speaking after the final whistle, the Japanese defender took the positives from the visitors’ night in the East Midlands which saw them pick up a clean sheet and a share of the spoils.

“I think the clean sheet is the most positive thing we can take from tonight, particularly since it is the first one in a long time," he said.

“That will be good for our confidence even if we couldn’t score today. For me, with the injury, I feel much better than in the last couple of months. Of course, we wanted to get three points but one point is better than nothing.”

The result means that victory over Bournemouth at St Mary’s is absolutely critical next weekend and the importance of the fixture will not be lost on one of Saints’ longest serving players.

“Bournemouth is now a massive game and we mustn’t give up. In this moment, every single match is huge. It is a home game, a derby game and everyone will expect so much from it.

“I will never give up until the end and I still believe we can make it and produce a better performance next time.”

Yoshida concluded with a word on defensive colleague Jan Bednarek, who made his second consecutive Premier League appearance alongside the Japanese at the King Power Stadium. For Maya, it has been an opportunity that the youngster richly deserves.

“Jan deserves his chance. I have been watching him for a long time; he is very professional and his attitude has been just right. He earned the right to play again tonight.”
