Mark Hughes wants a reaction from his players before Southampton return to Premier League action at Arsenal next Sunday.
The Saints boss was left lamenting a below-par display in his first Premier League game in charge as his team went down 3-0 at West Ham on Saturday.
Hughes now has his first full week with the whole squad to prepare for the trip to the Emirates Stadium.
“We need a response,” he said. “This was a significant game and we’ve come up short.
“For us to improve and give us a better opportunity to win Premier League points, we’re going to have to do a lot of work.
“We’ve got to have a good week. Clearly our preparation was hampered with people being away, but that was the same for West Ham so we can’t hide behind that.”
If nothing else, Hughes saw the West Ham loss as a valuable learning experience in his new job.
“It’s been helpful,” he added. “Clearly, some players find it a little bit difficult to transfer what they produce in training games into match situations.
“I need guys I can rely on who can produce six, seven, eight out of ten week in, week out. If we can get that collectively from everybody, we’ve got a better chance.
“We’ve got to be better. Next week we’re up against a team who will arguably test us more than West Ham have, so that should focus everybody’s mind.”
