Mario Lemina had a hand in the game’s only goal as Gabon defeated UAE to take third place in the friendly King’s Cup in Thailand on Sunday.
Lemina’s compatriots were surprisingly beaten 4-2 on penalties by the hosts earlier in the week but made amends against Ivan Zaccheroni’s side thanks to Lévy Madinda’s 14th-minute winner.
Saints’ Lemina was lively throughout before being withdrawn on 79 minutes and provided a flash of quality to put his team in front.
The midfielder’s surging run and cross from the left set up Andre Biyogo Poko whose heavy touch fell kindly for Asteras Tripoli’s Madinda to drill home via a touch from the goalkeeper.
Slovakia edged past Thailand in the day’s other game; strikes from Ondrej Duda, Robert Mak and Erik Pacinda setting up a 3-2 victory in the final to lift the trophy.
