Michael Obafemi and Thomas O’Connor both featured prominently as Ireland U19s took a big step towards the UEFA Euro U19 Championships with a 3-0 win over Kosovo in Portugal on Saturday.
The Saints pair started the game for the boys in green and it was forward Obafemi who got them on the scoreboard inside five minutes, rolling his marker smartly in the box before firing home for the game’s opening goal.
Lee O’Connor doubled their advantage moments later, lobbing the goalkeeper on the run after a mix-up in the Kosovan defence.
Rowan Roache added a third nine minutes after the restart, turning home Obafemi’s left-wing cross from close range to further improve the Saints striker’s impressive afternoon and put the result beyond any doubt.
Following Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Slovakia, the Irish are now in a strong position with four points from two matches at the top of qualifying Group 5.
With only the group winners advancing to join hosts Finland in the draw in the summer, Obafemi and O’Connor’s side are set to go toe to toe with rivals Portugal in their final fixture on Tuesday to decide who reaches the finals.
