Southampton's Shane Long was introduced as a second-half substitute in Republic of Ireland's 1-0 friendly defeat against Turkey.

Turkey captain Mehmet Topal's strike early in the second half proved the difference, as the hosts claimed a narrow win in Antalya.

With Ireland coach Martin O'Neill naming a largely-inexperienced side for his team's first game of 2018, Long started among the subs, before being introduced in the 62nd minute.

The Irish were more of a threat with the Saints forward on the pitch, but were unable to earn an equaliser, despite some late chances.

O'Neill's men will be back in action at the end of May, when they visit France, with Long now returning to Southampton ahead of next weekend's Premier League visit to West Ham.
