Mark Hughes says he is relishing the challenge of improving Southampton’s fortunes in the Premier League after signing a deal to become the new First Team Manager until the end of the season.
Hughes returns to the south coast 18 years after his spell here as a player and brings with him a wealth of managerial experience and expertise in the top-flight having taken charge of over 400 games.
“It’s a challenge, but it’s one I’m excited by and the opportunity to come back a club I know well and have a real affinity with in my view was one I wasn’t expecting at the late stage of the season,” Hughes said.
“But when an opportunity like this presents itself you have to take it and my connection with the club was important as well.
“I bring experience of the Premier League and I’ve won a lot of points in my career as Premier League manager.
“I understand what it takes to win games in this league. First and foremost, I think it’s about coming in and maybe being that different voice and giving different messages from myself and the staff.
“The objective clearly is to make sure we’re a Premier League club next year. That’s where the club needs to be and that’s where it should be.
“My intention is to make sure it remains that.”
