Michael Obafemi is hoping his first goal for Southampton Under-23s will stop the friendly taunts from his teammates.
The 17-year-old striker was thrust from the Under-18s straight into the first team when he made his debut off the bench against Tottenham a month ago.
Without a goal since, Obafemi got back on track as he found the net for Radhi Jaïdi’s side in the 5-1 win at Newcastle last night.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” he said. “The boys have given me a bit of stick because it’s been a long time coming!
“This is my first goal since making my debut, so I’m just happy to score and now I want to kick on.”
Obafemi admitted he took time to adapt to Under-23 football, but now feels comfortable playing as the spearhead in a talented attacking team.
“The first few games I was a bit easy-osy, but now I’m getting into it, feeling confident and linking up with Hesky (Jake Hesketh),” he added.
“Hopefully in the next game I can score against Blackburn and get myself back in the first team.”
